Today’s column was created fresh off me teaching a class on writing, and I felt inspired to share with you, my dedicated column readers, a few of the nuggets that came up from that class.
First, let me pose a question. How do you define the creative being within you? I don’t expect that is a question you receive often so let’s deconstruct it a bit. Imagine if you could drop all the expectations of who you think you are supposed to be as a writer and allow yourself to percolate in the essence of who you creatively are. Where do those expectations come from? Your profession, your peers, your friends, your clients, your spouse… anyone who has some kind of stake or claim in your process. Strip away all the noise and look at what you would write if there was no agenda.
What holds people back from taking the dive into the creative unknown is often untended or unruly emotions. Take anger, which scares so much of us. How could that anger, seething and red, translate in a productive way onto the page? If you have courage to look anger in the face, it can inform you (as behind anger is a lot of deep emotion) and lead to more curiosity and intuitive digging under the surface. Allow anger to be the doorway to courage.
It’s important to look at any agenda you may have for success in this process. Leaning into a place of essence won’t be supported by a rigid task master. It’s a place of feeling and listening to where you are evoked and called.
Today I want you to open up and give yourself permission to imagine your creative life without boundaries of expectations, and see what comes forth to be unleashed.
